If genes are replicators carried by bodies, memes are replicators carried by minds — a tune, a slogan, a recipe, a god, a conspiracy. They spread by the same mathematics that governs disease: each carrier exposes some number of others, and whether the idea explodes or fizzles turns on a single threshold. Below it the idea dies out; above it, it sweeps the population. Beneath fashion, music, slang and taste runs a quieter engine: the human compulsion to read and signal status. We copy upward — toward the prestigious, the admired, the few — because imitation is a cheap shortcut to learning what is worth wanting. But this creates a paradox that guarantees perpetual motion: the moment a high-status marker is widely copied, it stops signaling status, and the elite must abandon it for something new. Taste therefore behaves like a wave that breaks and reforms forever — adopted at the top, diffused to the middle, discarded as it reaches the bottom. Whether humans are fundamentally trend-following organisms is not quite a metaphor: conformity is so deeply wired that we will deny the evidence of our own eyes to agree with a group.

The recommendation engine is the single most powerful trend-shaping device ever deployed, because it closes the loop in milliseconds: it measures what holds you, then gives you more of it, then measures again.
